Understanding Spine Deformity

Spine deformity is a condition that causes variation in the shape of a spine structure. It causes severe pain and restricts the motion. It can develop in childhood or adulthood and may have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. The conditions that can cause spine deformities are scoliosis, an injury from an accident, arthritis, osteoporosis, and many others.

Having uneven shoulders and hips, protruding shoulder blade and misalignment of the head over the midline of the body are some of the common signs of spine deformities. Few diagnoses associated with spine deformities are scoliosis, achondroplasia, Becker muscular dystrophy, brittle bone disease, osteoporosis, Marfan’s syndrome, and meningomyelocele and many more.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of a spinal deformity, DR Surya Prakash is here to help you. Schedule your consultation today.

Causes of Spine Deformity

The causes of spine deformity are as follows:

  • Accidents
  • Genetic defects
  • Infectious diseases
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Neuromuscular diseases
  • Osteoporosis
  • Poor posture

Spinal Deformity Assessment:

During your initial consultation, DR Surya Prakash will assess your spine problems through MRI and a special full spine x-ray. After completing all the medical assessments and necessary investigations, he will plan your surgery. He also answers all your questions regarding surgery, hospital stay, and recovery.

Spinal Deformity Treatment:

Once your diagnosis for spinal deformity is confirmed, DR Surya Prakash recommends the treatment options that best fit your condition. The treatment options available for the spine deformity, include:

  1. Back bracing
  2. Medications
  3. Physical therapy
  4. Specific back exercises

During the Surgery:

You will have pre-anesthesia check up (PAC) and Intravenous line (IV) before the surgery. Then you will be sent to OT. During the procedure, your surgeon will cut the middle position of back to access your spine.

If the reason for the spinal deformities is loosened vertebrae, then he will remove the joints between the vertebrae. After removing the joints, the vertebrae will become rough, and new bones which are capable of filling the gaps will begin to form.

He may also use bone grafts to straighten the spine. To maintain the spine in a neutral position, he also uses artificial implants such as rods, hooks, and screws. Then he will close the cut made using stitches or staples.

The surgery usually takes around 4-6 hours. However, the duration for the surgery largely depends on the severity of spine deformity. Following the surgery, you will be sent to the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) or Intensive Care Unit for observation.

After the Surgery:

Immediately after the surgery, you may experience some pain, and fever, which lasts for 2 days. However, your surgeon will prescribe appropriate medications, including pain relievers, to provide you enough pain relief.

During post-surgery, the rehabilitation team will monitor your progress and provides you physiotherapy, which continues for a week. Once your wound is completely healed, you will be sent home.
